Benson's Surgery

In January Benson threw up all over here and there. I put him in the bath to clean him up and noticed that his scrotum was HUGE and BLUE. I called the pediatricians office who told us to take him to the ER immediately because that was far from normal. He wasn't in any pain though which was weird to everyone. We got all settled into the ER and they did a few ultra sounds and lots of poking. It was decided he had a hydrocele. They referred us to a urologist. After getting more poking done Dr Nixon agreed and set up a plan. A hydrocele is 2 holes in the tube the testicles use to descend into the scrotum, Benson's just never closed up. Dr Nixon told us if my 18 months they hadn't closed on their own they wouldn't and it would require surgery. We went back to Dr Nixon at the beginning of December and he said they hadn't closed, he referred us to a pediatric general surgeon in Reno, Dr Frieda Hulka (who I ADORE! and would recommend to anyone who needs a pediatric surgeon!) she agreed the surgery was the only way to get this fixed. He was scheduled to go in this morning. We had to be at the hospital in Reno by 6am, the surgery was supposed to start at 7:30, but didn't until 7:45. He was in the OR for 45 mins, and then in recovery for about 1.5 hours and then we came home. It was rough coming out of anesthesia, he cried and thrashed, but once he had some stronger pain meds he went to sleep and woke up much happier. If you came over this afternoon you would've NEVER known he had just had surgery. He played and ate and acted normal! Which, is a HUGE relief to this mama. He's currently sleeping, hopefully through the night. I am so grateful for the speed at which this was taken care of, and for the staff at the hospital..they were so nice and helpful and sympathetic and just great, made a scary experience just that much better.

In his gown ready to go. I think he looks so cute in it!

 being silly

We stayed the night in Reno, hoping to let Benson sleep in a little and make it faster to get to the hospital. First off, it took us an HOUR to check in because everyone and their mother decided to check in at the same time. Then I rushed to feed him and get him to sleep. It took him a bit to get to sleep, but once he did he was great....until midnight. Then he was up. I thought putting him in bed with us would help...NOPE I was SO wrong. He played and talked and jumped until about 3:30. blech. He finally crashed out and slept great until we had to wake him up to go, which was hard..look how cute he looks all asleep!

I'm super grateful for the blessing Benson got, that helped relax me and allowed me to not pace the waiting room. Overall, I'm just really glad today it OVER!
